Yi ancient drama makes international debut in Nice

Performers from Bijie, Guizhou province brought the culture of the Yi ethnic group to the Carnival de Nice in France on Feb 12. The annual carnival began on this year on Feb 11 and will continue until Feb 25.

Forty-two actors from Bijie were invited by the carnival’s to stage a Yi style performance. The highlight of the performance was the ancient drama Cuo Ji Tai, which depicts the history of human evolution in the form of sacrificial ceremonies. The drama was listed as an intangible cultural heritage item in 2006, and this is the first time the drama has been performed on an international stage.
