In a tradition stretching back at least 200 years, locals from Minzhu, a village located on the outskirts of Pingtan's Su'ao town, set off a giant kite into the night sky on Feb 12.

The tradition prays for good fortune, happiness, and a prosperous harvest in the coming year. The kite itself had 49 oval lanterns attached and was 3 meters across and 3 meters high. Locals decorated the flanks of the kite with patterns of the sun, moon, and stars using artistic techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.
