Tourism thrived in Pingtan, Fujian province during the May Day holiday, which ran from April 30 to May 2 this year, ptnet.cn reported on May 3.

Local tourism development bureau announced that the zone received 158,700 tourists during the holiday, up 76.38 percent year-on-year.

It also saw historical tourism revenue of over 60 million yuan ($9.3 million), a surge of 131.16 percent compared with the same period of the previous year.

The Haitan Ancient City, a large tourism complex featuring antique buildings, was one of the hottest scenic spots. It attracted about 101,000 visitors during the holiday.

Other popular tourist destinations included Tannan Bay, Haiyu Plaza, the Deity's Well, a sea-erosion landform, Shipaiyang, a reef which is a combination of tablet-shaped rocks, and some others.

Notably, tourism services at local scenic spots were improved to give tourists a better travel experience. For example, the Tannan Bay added a new plaza, parking lots, a shower center, and public toilets, to satisfy the visitors and give them more convenience.

Also, a temporary tourist service center was set up especially for the holiday, to ensure the visitors were well served.
