Pingtan's Qingfeng wind power clean development mechanism (CDM) project registered with the CDM Executive Board, United Nations, on July 13, reported people.com.cn.

With an investment of approximately 600 million yuan ($93.9 million), it has an installed capacity of 48 thousand kW. Once built, it will produce about 1,400 million kW every year, contributing an annual output value of 90 million yuan.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), one of the flexibility mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol, is intended to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets with cooperation between developed and developing countries. It allows the transfer and acquisition of project-based carbon dioxide emissions reductions so that developed countries can meet their obligations by obtaining emission reductions from developing countries. Meanwhile, developing countries can gain extra capital and technology support to achieve sustainable development by selling the greenhouse gas emission reductions to developed countries.

Pingtan's project is the fourth registered CDM project by the Fujian Investment Group. The other three are the Putian gas plant project, Fuqing Zeqi wind power project, and Xiapu Dajing wind power project, with a total installed capability of 186 thousand kW, reducing about 400 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emission annually compared to the same scale thermal power project.

The new project is located in Pingtan’s Baiqing village and Pingyuan town region, and was approved by the Fujian Provincial Development and Reform Commission on December 30, 2010.
