Pingnan county, in Fujian province, is the only standard production base of pholiota nameko mushrooms within the areas south of the Yangtze River.

Pingnan's farmers cultivate pholiota nameko on the basis of the fungi by-products and residues of the tremella and pleurotus eryngii mushrooms. Currently, the purchasing price of pholiota nameko is nearly 5 yuan ($0.8) per kilogram, and the supply has not yet saturated the market demands. More than 30 million fungi bags of pholiota nameko are expected to add 100 million yuan ($16.3 million) to Pingnan's agricultural revenue in 2014.
