Casas PePe Tapas and Bar

Updated: 2009-01-13 15:02 We started out with the Gambas Al Ajilo, a spicy sautéed shrimp dish seasoned with garlic chili and a variety of herbs. It was simply delectable: perfectly flavored so that the kick of the chili didn’t outweigh the natural deliciousness of the buttered shrimp. We followed with grilled Chorizo, the classic Spanish sausage dish doused with virgin oil and red wine. The preparation was fantastic and the meat succulent. The portions were generous enough for us both to get our fill, which is fortunate since I had a hard time putting my fork down. The final tapas, and the clear winner of the bunch, was the delightful Esqueixada de Bacalla, a light yet luscious filet of cod on top of a salad of juicy tomato, onion, and olive. Served raw but seasoned in oil, the fish was so sumptuous that it literally melted in the mouth. Be sure to put it on your list. The sangria was served in a refreshingly tall glass and was exquisitely mixed. It was a perfect accompaniment to the meal. Casa Pepe is a real stand-out in the Shanghai tapas scene. As if it wasn’t inviting enough already, a RMB180 all-you-can eat and drink Tuesday special, Thursday RMB 15 drink specials, and a RMB 118 brunch ought to sweeten the deal. It’s a place to unwind. It’s a place to truly enjoy eating and conversing. It’s a real gem.
