Kong Yi Ji Shang Yan

First impressions of Kong Yi Ji Shang Yan: cool, moist air and the sounds of a waterfall. The large first floor dining area has line of sight to all parts of the room, but is broken by a multi-tiered floor plan (great for people watching).

Decor is soothing and peaceful: dark furniture, a raised center dias under which runs a pool (with fish), a pagoda with flowers and a bird cage, hanging woven dividers between the booths on the right, private rooms with doors on the opposite side, and an even higher dining area to the back.

Our party of three was met by a gracious Mr. Wang (Assistant G. M.). He explained that his restaurant represented Southern Chinese cuisine, with international fusion-style elements in terms of flavors, presentation, and nutrition, as well as decor.

He talked of "chef culture": elite chefs needing 20 years of experience who can produce a menu that reflects the distinctive qualities of their food in delicacy, sophistication, and contemporary presentation.

Eighty percent of the restaurant's material is shipped up from southern China so they can take advantage of seasonally fresh ingredients.
