Sage massage

Created by Matthew Murdock, a professional therapist from Arizona's top spas, Rollerssage combines Swedish massage techniques with semi-precious stones to re-establish equilibrium and rejuvenate the mind. The first in China, we were eager to give the revolutionary massage a go, and for a July special of 450 yuan an hour (without tax), it's easily affordable.

After a rinse in the cavernous shower featuring eight showerheads on the left and right, we were led to a display of four pairs of semi-precious stones from which we were instructed to choose two. Each type of stone, we learned, holds a unique healing property and guests are invited to mix and match according to their needs. For example, rose quartz promotes balance by resolving hurt and anger and encouraging a sense of calm. Meanwhile, sodalite can be used to find inner peace and wisdom. Feeling neither hurt nor distressed, we chose the hematite, to alleviate tension and fatigue, and tiger eye, to help us refocus. Upon selection, each stone was warmed and placed on parts of our body.

Next, our therapist removed heated, sphere-shaped stones from a water basin and inserted them into the patented rollerssage tool. As the stones rolled over our body, they left a trail of warmth in their wake, soothing our muscles. Who knew that a massage could be so effective without hands? When it was over, we found our tension and fatigue had vanished, though whether it was due to the stones, we can’t be sure. Regardless, we left feeling optimistic and light, comforted by the weight of our own hematite in our pocket, a souvenir of a spa experience well worth remembering.
