At the Rio Summer Olympics, the Chinese women's volleyball team lost to the Netherlands 3-2 in their opening match on Saturday. Twelve teams are playing round robin preliminaries in two groups. The top four finishers from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.

Despite the surprising loss, China head coach Jenny Lang Ping thought it was good learning experience for the young team.

The team has netted four World Cup victories since the first one in 1981.

In the latest world ranking for women's volleyball, China is in second place behind the US.

After winning gold in 1984, the Chinese players struck Olympic gold again at the 2004 Athens Games by overcoming Russia.
