The first batch of 2014 metal export quotas was released, coming in somewhat lower than that of a year ago, the Ministry of Commerce said on Friday.

The export quota of 15,110 metric tons of rare earths, which was slightly lower than a year ago, includes 13,314 tons for light rare earths and 1,796 tons for medium-heavy rare earths.

Last year, China had issued quotas for 15,499 tons of rare earths in the first batch. The 2014 rare earths quotas have been given to 24 firms.

China is the world's leading exporter of rare earth metals that include 17 elements that are widely used in high-tech products.
