A "safe haven" for abandoned children in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, received its first baby on Tuesday, the day it was opened.

About 6 pm on Tuesday evening, a guard from Nanjing Children's Welfare Institution found a baby boy of less than 7 days old in the haven. Whoever placed the baby left no message.

The baby appeared fine and workers of the institution will check to see if he has any health problems.

The haven, which is next door to the institution, is equipped with an incubator, a crib, bedding, a ventilation fan and an air conditioner to create a comfortable environment for the babies. An alarm and infrared motion sensor inform staff when the haven is used.
