Wang Shukun, 43, had been held in the Guandu District Detention Center since July 19 on suspicion of participation in disturbing the social order, said a spokesman at the Public Security Bureau of Kunming, capital of Yunnan.

Wang became sick and showed symptoms of fever on Thursday night. He was immediately sent to a hospital affiliated to the Yunnan provincial prison management bureau, about 40 minutes' drive from the detention center.

Doctors at the hospital designated to treat seriously ill inmates, conducted emergency procedures about 11:20 pm Friday after Wang's physical situation deteriorated rapidly.

Wang died at 0:30 am Saturday after first aid efforts failed, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the death.
