Columbia connects outdoor heritage with China's changing needs
The inclusion of fishing also draws on Columbia’s long-standing expertise in this field. In 1960, the brand created a prototype functional fishing vest to meet anglers’ practical needs, laying early groundwork for its laterlaunched iconic PFG (Performance Fishing Gear) line.
“With decades of expertise in developing waterside outdoor products and researching how people use them, we are able to combine our fishing heritage with mainstream trail experience, ” he said.
China’s outdoor market is booming, creating opportunities for the wider industry while offering consumers a growing range of choices. Yet misconceptions persist about what professional outdoor gear should deliver. Some consumers are swayed primarily by aesthetics and marketing, while the rapid evolution of outdoor activities in China continues to generate new and increasingly varied demands.
The market is also moving beyond the social media-driven culture of visiting scenic spots for photographs and check-ins. Consumers are becoming more discerning, placing greater emphasis on how equipment performs in real-world conditions. One distinctive feature of China’s outdoor market is the blurring of boundaries between activities and settings. A single piece of gear may need to serve equally well in everyday urban life as well as in demanding wilderness environments.
Amid intensifying competition, Columbia is taking a longterm approach to understanding and meeting these evolving needs, Lion said.
“We must stay close to the wilderness and our community to identify realworld needs quickly, including those consumers may not be able to articulate and translate those insights into tangible products. Grounded in the actual experiences of outdoor enthusiasts, we prioritize research and development along with rigorous onsite field testing. Hike Party is an important expression of this approach, allowing us to test our products, in authentic settings,” he said.
