The National Police Service said police have launched a comprehensive investigation with relevant professional bodies to establish the cause of the collapse and determine whether anyone was criminally liable.

"Anyone found culpable of negligence or violating building regulations would face the law," Muchiri Nyaga, the police spokesperson, said.

The police urged the public to keep clear of Yusuf Haji Avenue and 9th Street to give excavators, canine units and rescue personnel room to work.

Families seeking information about missing relatives were asked to contact the Red Cross desk at the scene or call 1199.
