Three new world records set in women's 61kg weightlifting

NAGOYA, Japan -- China's Yang Liuyue set world records in the snatch and total on her way to winning the women's 61-kilogram weightlifting title at the 20th Asian Games on Friday.

Yang lifted 112kg in the snatch to see a world record before adding 139kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 251kg.

DPRK's Pak Jin-hae refreshed a world record of 139kg in the clean and jerk, which Yang later matched to secure the gold medal.

The 19-year-old Yang had chalked up a world record in the snatch in the women's 63kg category at this year's Asian Weightlifting Championships. Pak took the silver with 248kg, while Kuo Hsing-chu from Chinese Taipei finished third with 237kg.

As the youngest competitor in the final, Yang said afterward that she did not focus on breaking records during the competition, but concentrated on her own lifts.

"I panicked a bit after my failed second clean-and-jerk attempt," she admitted. "I went all out on the third. I told myself to give it everything before stepping onto the platform. Once I started lifting, I couldn't think anything else."

Friday marked Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese festival. Yang said the weightlifting team planned to admire the moon from the deck of the cruise ship where the athletes are accommodating, and she would send her best wishes to her family.

"Before we left, my teammates even said they would post photos of us watching the moon on social media," she said.

Earlier in the day, 24-year-old Oh Kwang-ok of DPR Korea stood out in the women's 57kg, posting 104kg in the snatch and 134kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 238kg, creating three world records.

Thailand lifter Suratwadee Yodsarn settled for silver with 219kg, while Chen Guan-ling of Chinese Taipei came third with 217kg.
