Lan Xingyu also produced scores above the coaching team's expectations on his three apparatus, while Zou maintained his usual consistency despite his sore bicep.

For Tian, the team gold marked a successful Asian Games debut. The young gymnast had made some mistakes in qualifying, but responded strongly in the final, completing all three of his routines successfully, including the horizontal bar.

Teng said the coaching staff had prepared the athletes for the pressure of competing on Japan's home turf, including the atmosphere and judging, with the team focused on maintaining its composure in the face of difficulties.

The Chinese gymnasts now turn their attention to the individual apparatus finals, before preparing for the world championships in Rotterdam in the Netherlands next month.

Teng said the team would seek further gold medals in the individual events while quickly reviewing its performance in Nagoya ahead of the worlds.

"Japan may not have been at its best this time, so we cannot let our guard down," Teng said. "But defeating them on their home turf has certainly given us a lot of confidence."
