Over 1,000 athletes from around 50 countries, regions seek glory at UIPM 2026 Obstacle World Championships in Beijing

More than 1,000 athletes from nearly 50 countries and regions gathered in Beijing on Wednesday as the UIPM 2026 Obstacle World Championships opened at Universal CityWalk Beijing, bringing one of the sport's biggest global competitions into the heart of the Chinese capital.

The five-day championships, running through Sunday, feature many of the world's leading obstacle racers and are part of Beijing's four-year run as host of the event from 2025 to 2028, reflecting China's growing role in the development of the sport.

Organized by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne, the championships are co-hosted by the Cycling and Fencing Sports Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, the National Olympic Sports Centre, the Chinese Modern Pentathlon Association and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports. BTG Sports, a subsidiary of Beijing Tourism Group, is the exclusive operator of the event.

Rob Stull, president of UIPM, praised both the competition and Beijing's ability to stage major international sporting events at the opening ceremony.

"Obstacle racing is exhilarating to participate in and thrilling to watch, and it is open to people of all ages and backgrounds," Stull said. "This year's World Championships features a stronger field, a richer competition program and an even broader vision for the future."

He said the event brings together children, young athletes, elite competitors and veteran participants on the same global stage.

Zhang Bin, president of the Chinese Modern Pentathlon Association, said holding the championships at Universal CityWalk Beijing represents a new approach to integrating high-level sporting competition with tourism, culture and urban commercial spaces.

The 2026 championships feature five disciplines: the individual 100 meters, individual 400 meters, individual 3 kilometers, 3-km team competition and a newly introduced 4x100-meter mixed relay.

Competitors are divided into elite and age-group categories. Elite athletes represent national or regional teams, while the age-group competitions are open to obstacle racing enthusiasts of all ages from around the world.

As the highest-level standalone world championship in obstacle racing, the event has attracted many of the sport's leading competitors, including athletes ranked among the world's top 50.

Egyptian athlete Mohamed El Ashqar, the UIPM 70-meter obstacle world record holder, is making his first appearance at the Obstacle World Championships. Brothers Luke and Kai Beckstrand, who took the top two places in both the men's elite 100-meter and 400-meter events at the previous championships, have also returned to compete.

The championships come at a significant moment for the development of modern pentathlon. As part of a major reform aimed at making the sport more dynamic and accessible to younger generations, UIPM has replaced equestrian riding with obstacle racing in the modern pentathlon competition format. The new discipline will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

Staging the championships in a major public and tourism destination also represents an experiment in taking elite competition beyond traditional sports venues and into urban life.

By integrating high-level competition with the city's commercial and cultural environment, organizers hope the event will bring elite sport closer to the public while creating stronger links between international sporting events, urban life and tourism.
