Mainland condemns Taiwan’s increased 'defense' budget

A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday condemned the Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te for escalating cross-Strait tensions by increasing the island's "defense" budget, reaffirming the mainland's unwavering resolve to combat "Taiwan independence" separatist activities.

Zhang Han, a spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks at a regular news conference, saying that Lai's authorities have stubbornly adhered to a separatist stance while disregarding the mainstream public aspiration for exchanges, cooperation, development and peace in Taiwan.

Recently, the Democratic Progressive Party authorities proposed raising Taiwan's annual "defense" budget to more than NT$1 trillion ($31.4 billion) in 2027, surpassing that threshold for the first time. Lai claimed the move aims to ensure that "defense" resources are transformed into "reliable defensive capabilities".

Zhang accused the authorities of escalating cross-Strait confrontation and squandering public resources in a futile attempt to "resist reunification by force" and pursue "Taiwan independence" through force.

"They are utterly overestimating their capabilities and will only bring severe disaster to the people of Taiwan," she said.

Zhang reiterated that the mainland's resolve and ability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity are unwavering and strong, leaving no room for any form of "Taiwan independence" separatist activities.

"We hope that Taiwan compatriots recognize the harm and danger of 'Taiwan independence' separatism, firmly oppose such separatist actions, and steadfastly uphold the common homeland of the Chinese nation as well as their own safety and well-being," Zhang added.
