Chinese State-owned carmaker FAW Group has developed a full-size vehicle roof prototype fitted with perovskite solar cells that could allow electric cars to generate power while sitting in the sun. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

The company estimates that if photovoltaic material were eventually extended to other parts of a vehicle, daily electricity generation could reach as much as 10 kilowatt-hours under favorable conditions. It could also provide up to 80 kilometers of additional driving range and meet the daily travel needs of more than 85 percent of users in China.

The development comes as China's electric vehicle market continues to expand. By the end of June, the country had nearly 49 million new-energy vehicles on its roads, about 69 percent of them fully electric, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
