The Sherwin-Williams Company, a US-based global player in the paint and coating industry, remains firmly committed to the Chinese market after a near century-long presence in the nation, driven mainly by sustainability, advanced manufacturing and industry expansion, said a senior executive.

Heidi Petz, chair, president and chief executive officer of Sherwin-Williams, made the remarks during a recent interview with China Daily, as the company celebrated its 160th anniversary in Shanghai.

Entering China in 1930, Sherwin-Williams has continuously expanded investment in local capabilities to build a strong foundation, growing together with its partners and customers to help them become more productive and profitable.

Petz highlighted that China is a very important market for the company and plays a meaningful role in its global growth strategy. As its Asian regional headquarters, China serves as a strong center for innovation, integration and collaboration across markets, supporting both local and multinational customers.

The company's solutions, especially its performance coatings, serve a broad range of industries including heavy equipment, transportation, energy, infrastructure, furniture and packaging. Actively engaged in the nation's rapid development, Sherwin-Williams' coatings have been used on a number of major landmark projects such as the Shanghai Tower and Beijing Daxing International Airport.

"What has impressed us most in China is really the market scale, the pace of development, the long-term growth potential, as well as the focus on innovation, technology, leadership and talent. There are so many opportunities here," said Petz.

The company sees an increasingly attractive business environment in China, which Petz described as "stable, transparent and predictable" helping it to expand its footprint and overall investment in the nation.

"We believe that there is growth for many years and decades to come, which is why we are making these investments. We are well positioned to support not only local customers, but also multinational customers operating here," she said.

For over nine decades, Sherwin-Williams has seen its role in China as being much more than a coatings supplier. Focusing on innovation and sustainability, it aims to be a long-term partner that helps customers respond to changing environmental standards, evolving global requirements, emerging needs and next-generation solutions.

As China continues to focus on higher-quality growth, the company is seeing increasing demand for high-performance coatings with sustainable attributes, especially in sectors such as energy efficiency, high-end manufacturing, green construction, sustainable construction and transportation, according to the company.

"China has a very competitive environment and significant opportunities. The competition helps us raise standards and continues to drive our innovation, and we see the biggest opportunities in sustainable solutions, advanced manufacturing and high-performance value-added products," said Petz.

Notably, the company particularly highlighted that coating batteries on new energy vehicles and artificial intelligence data centers — including transformers, cooling towers and other components — stand among its key priorities for growth in China.

Labeling the Chinese market as "expansive and advanced", Petz reaffirmed the 160-year-old company's commitment to the market and dedication to helping add value to local partners.

"We work closely with customers to understand their needs and then help develop tailored solutions. We will stay focused on building resilient partnerships with customers, industry stakeholders and local communities. That's why we exist and it's exciting," she said.
