The production was a blend of ancient elegance and modern theatrical craft. Initiated about two years ago, the Chinese opera, produced by Shanghai Opera House, premiered in March.

The story follows three women — Zhao Pan'er, Song Yinzhang and Sun Sanniang — as they leave their hometown for the bustling capital during the Song Dynasty. Each faces personal hardships and societal constraints but strives to build independent lives through entrepreneurship, courage, and friendship. Zhao, once a courtesan, seeks respect beyond her past; Song challenges tradition to pursue her own dreams; and Sun draws on her boldness to overcome obstacles. United by loyalty and determination, they navigate love, rivalry, and the complexities of a male-dominated society, embodying resilience and female empowerment in a vibrant historical setting.
