Three dead, seven missing after landslide in Xizang
A landslide struck a caterpillar fungus harvesting site in Muta township, Dengchen county in Chamdo city, Xizang autonomous region, at around 9:30 pm on Sunday, leaving three people confirmed dead and seven others missing, according to the local emergency authorities, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Two individuals were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the people's hospital in Dengchen county. Their conditions are reported to be stable and not life-threatening.
A total of 489 personnel, including rescue workers and medical staff members, have been deployed to the site, along with 63 pieces of equipment such as ambulances and excavators. Search efforts are supported by seven rescue dogs, eight satellite phones, and a portable weather station.
A second wave of personnel and supplies is en route, including 50 firefighters and 20 additional machines.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the landslide caused about 200,000 cubic meters of collapsed material. Experts from water conservancy and natural resources departments warn that the area remains at risk of secondary landslides.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management has activated a Level IV national emergency response for geological disasters. A national firefight and rescue team consisting of 193 personnel, 58 vehicles, and seven dogs has also been dispatched to support local operations.
Rescue and relief efforts remain underway.
