Zhang Ping, a former senior anti-corruption official in Guizhou province, stood trial on Thursday for accepting more than 47.72 million yuan ($6.53 million) in bribes, according to a report from Xinhua News Agency.

The Tianjin Municipal People's Procuratorate accused Zhang of abusing his positions between 2008 and 2023, including serving as deputy secretary of the Guizhou provincial commission for discipline inspection and deputy head of the provincial commission of supervision. He allegedly used these roles to seek benefits for individuals and organizations in project contracting, loan approval, case handling and job promotion, the report said.

In April last year, Zhang was placed under investigation for serious violations of discipline and law. He was expelled from the Communist Party of China and dismissed from public office in October.

During Thursday's hearing, Zhang made a final statement in court, pleaded guilty and expressed remorse. The court has adjourned and will announce its verdict at a later date.
