Dike breach sealed in Inner Mongolia
A dike breach on a river in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region was sealed at 2:13 pm on Wednesday, with no casualties reported, according to the local drought relief and flood control headquarters. The breach, over 10 meters wide, occurred at about 12:40 pm on Tuesday on the Laoha River in Taipingdi, a town in the city of Chifeng. More than 800 residents had to be evacuated, and some 600 hectares of farmland were inundated. Over 800 rescue personnel from the armed police and firefighting, public security, emergency management and other departments were mobilized to seal the breach.
Police ensure smooth train travel in Beijing
A special campaign has been launched to ensure safety and smooth traffic at major train stations in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, according to Beijing railway police. As part of the campaign, the railway police have teamed up with public security departments, railway enterprises and traffic management units across the three regions to conduct patrols and inspections at 45 passenger train stations. The authorities have conducted over 60 joint law enforcement operations, clearing more than 5,100 long-parked vehicles near train stations and holding people accountable for 207 traffic offenses. Summer is typically a peak travel season for trains in China, driven by the two-month summer holiday for students.
Waterfall accident leads to arrests
Several people are in police custody following an incident at a waterfall recreational facility that killed one person and injured at least 60 others in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, authorities said on Tuesday. The deadly incident occurred at 1:56 pm on Saturday on the "Magic Carpet Project", a moving walkway for tourists visiting the Detian Waterfall, which is operated by China Travel Guangxi Detian Waterfall Tourism Development Co. A preliminary investigation has indicated that the cause was a rupture in a hinge connection while the moving walkway was in operation. Further investigation is underway.
China, Thailand to hold air force exercise
China and Thailand will hold a joint air force exercise — Falcon Strike-2024 — this month, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense announced on Wednesday. The exercise, part of annual cooperation between the two militaries, will take place at a Thai air force base, and China will send multiple types of aircraft and special forces to participate, it said. The ministry said the goal of the joint exercise is to enhance combat skills and deepen practical exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries.
