International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music puts limelight on tradition

"But there was a serious lack of accomplished conductors of Chinese music, and there was no international competition that focused on conducting Chinese music."

He added that conducting Chinese orchestral music requires an understanding of each instrument, and also a deep familiarity with the philosophy and aesthetic concepts of Chinese music.

According to top winner Huang, the competition gave him a great opportunity to gain conducting experiences with HKCO and further hone his music skills in front of international audiences and judges to improve.

Hong Kong SAR's Permanent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Joe Wong Chi-cho said the SAR government has been backing up Chinese music undertakings for long.
