Zhejiang woman receives lenient sentence for rooftop poppy plantation

A woman in Zhejiang province has received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, and a 3,000 yuan ($420) fine for planting poppy plants on her rooftop. The Taijiang County People's Court announced the verdict on Wednesday.
According to court documents shared on their official WeChat account, the woman, identified by her surname Zhang, planted over 900 poppy plants believing them to be a seasoning for hot pot. Zhang reportedly acquired the seeds from her late father in October 2023.
In February, authorities conducting aerial drone surveillance for unrelated purposes discovered the plants on Zhang's rooftop. A subsequent search by police confirmed the presence of over 900 suspected poppy plants. Samples were seized and tested, verifying them as opium poppies.
On April 1, the Taijiang County People's Procuratorate formally charged Zhang with illegally planting poppy plants. The court found her guilty, acknowledging the large number of plants involved. However, the court also considered Zhang's remorse and cooperation during the investigation, ultimately issuing a suspended sentence.
Opium poppies are a controlled substance in China due to their use in producing illegal narcotics. The case highlights the importance of public awareness regarding such plants and the potential legal consequences of their unauthorized cultivation.
