Beijing police solve 1,000 online crimes since June

More than 1,000 online crimes have been solved by Beijing police and over 800 suspects captured, since a campaign targeting such offenses was launched at the end of June.

The Beijing Public Security Bureau released the figures on Thursday, pledging to continue the campaign with greater efforts to catch those using the internet to infringe people's legitimate rights through illegal acts such as online fraud and purchase of personal data.

In one case, 16 members from two groups who allegedly used software to steal admission tickets for scenic spots and then resell them at a higher price have been criminally detained, the bureau said.

Police officers also seized 25 mobile phones, 21 computers and 26 software programs used to illegally access the tickets when they arrested the suspects, it said, adding that the illicit gains totaled more than 2.3 million yuan ($315,497).

During the campaign, police also cracked down on six people suspected of hacking into the website of an internet company and transferring money to their personal accounts, according to the bureau. More than 100,000 yuan was stolen, it said.

In addition, the bureau, along with cyberspace departments, has strengthened oversight of livestreaming, video sharing, job seeking and friend finding on internet platforms, with the removal of more than 450,000 items of harmful information. Over 11,000 problematic accounts were also closed, it added.
