China's top legislator, Zhao Leji, on Wednesday stressed efforts to complete the tasks in the legislative program of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee in a high-quality manner to lay a solid legal foundation for advancing Chinese modernization.

Zhao, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, made the remarks at a meeting of the standing committee on legislative work held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

He underlined upholding the Party's overall leadership over legislative work, especially the centralized and unified leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. Zhao called for adherence to the correct political orientation in legislative work.

He said legislative work should be based on the country's conditions and realities with system-based thinking and a grasp of objective laws to consistently enhance the quality of legislation.

Zhao called for upholding the leading role of people's congresses in legislation and further integrating legislation with legal education and legal oversight. He urged efforts to safeguard the authority and dignity of the Constitution and other laws.
