Eight people have been sentenced to prison for infringing on the personal information of celebrities.

The Nanhai District People's Court in Foshan city, Guangdong province, found that the defendants, who were all high-speed rail station workers, had taken advantage of their positions to sell the travel information and ID numbers of celebrities to others. The information was then sold to even more people, with the defendants making a profit of over 560,000 yuan ($77,795).

The defendants were sentenced to between three years and eight months and three years and nine months in prison. They were also fined a total of 567,530 yuan and ordered to delete the information they had obtained illegally and apologize publicly.

The court found that the defendants had committed the crime of infringing on the personal information of citizens. They had disregarded national regulations and unlawfully sold the personal information they had obtained during working, causing harm to public interests.

Both celebrities and common citizens enjoy legal protection for their personal information. However, the illegal sale and unauthorized disclosure of personal information have become increasingly common, causing significant distress to society, the court said.
