By publishing an article on the Wall Street Journal, Lai Ching-te, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for the 2024 island leadership election, attempted to cater to external forces and gain support from the United States, Taiwan's pro-reunification Labor Party said on Friday.

The party issued a statement condemning the "Taiwan independence" position of Lai and his malicious criticism of the Chinese mainland in the recent article in order to seek political gain.

The party said Lai's article circulating US media showed his eagerness to seek support from the US and revealed his "Taiwan independence" stance.

In the article, Lai deliberately distorted the mainland's efforts to maintain territorial sovereignty and defend the principle that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to China, in order to cater to the US, it said.

The party said that because Lai insists on his "Taiwan independence" position and refuses to acknowledge the 1992 Consensus that embodies the one-China principle, his proposed four "pillars" of peace in the article lacked practicality.

It said that Lai's article was just an attempt to deceive voters, and urged the island society to see through his "Taiwan independence" stance and resist his efforts that undermine cross-Strait relations for personal political gain.
