Railway and airports to see peak travel during the upcoming holiday

China's railway network is expected to handle more than 70 million passenger trips during the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday, the national railway operator China State Railway Group said on Wednesday.

About 71 million passenger trips are expected to be made from Wednesday to Sunday, with the average daily railway trips reaching 14.2 million. Passenger peak is expected to be at its highest on Thursday, with about 16 million trips expected to be made.

China's railway network is maximizing the transportation potential and increasing capacity to satisfy people's travel needs, while improving service quality to ensure that passengers have better experiences, according to the group.

More bullet trains and sleeper trains will be arranged during the holiday travel rush, especially on popular routes like those between Shanghai and Guangzhou, Guangdong province, as well as Beijing and Kunming of Yunnan province.

More short-trip tourism trains will be operated to fulfill passengers' needs, the group said.

Beijing's two airports, Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport, will also see a boom in passenger trips during the holiday.

Beijing Capital is expected to handle 442,000 passenger trips from Thursday to Saturday, with the average number of daily trips reaching 147,000. A total of 3,186 flights will be operated with the daily average of 1,062 flights, according to the airport.

The peak before the holiday travel rush falls on Wednesday, with about 164,000 trips expected to be made. After the holiday, more international flights will resume at the Beijing Capital airport.

At Beijing Daxing, about 330,000 passenger trips are expected to be made from Thursday to Saturday. The daily number of flights is about the same as the number during the May Day holiday, which fell at the beginning of May.

Peak day at Beijing Daxing is expected to fall on Saturday with about 120,000 trips expected to be made, according to the airport.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year's holiday will fall on Thursday.
