Injured dolphin recovers after rescue in China's Hainan
HAIKOU -- An injured dolphin rescued in South China's Hainan province last year has recovered, and will be released into the sea later this month, according to a marine biological research base in Danzhou city, Hainan.
The dolphin, the first stranded Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin to be rescued in China, ran ashore in Hainan last April. Rescuers at the research base on Haihua Island said the dolphin was dying when they first saw it.
"It had a severe abdominal injury and the wound was infected. Its body temperature was lower than normal when it was found on the shore," said the staff.
After a year of intensive care at the base, the dolphin has fully recovered and is undergoing training aimed at helping it survive in the wild. It has shown an ability to capture live herring by itself.
