President Xi Jinping and other leaders of the Communist Party of China and the State will join representatives from all walks of life on Friday morning in Tian'anmen Square in Beijing to pay tribute to the nation's fallen heroes on China's Martyrs' Day. The event will be broadcast live by China Media Group.
The National People's Congress, China's top legislature, approved Sept 30 as Martyrs' Day in 2014, to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for national independence and prosperity, as well as the welfare of the people in modern times, since the First Opium War (1840-42).
