STOCKHOLM - A Swedish athlete tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Beijing, despite six negative PCR-tests during the previous week and the squad being issued with high-tech masks for the journey.

The Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC) confirmed on Saturday that cross-country skier Leo Johansson tested positive when landing in China before the weekend. A second test on Saturday was also positive.

Less than two weeks ago, Johansson's participation in the Olympics was uncertain when he tested positive in connection with a training camp. However, he had no symptoms and after six negative PCR tests, he was cleared to leave for Beijing.

"Our medical team has assessed that his positive tests are a result of his previous infection and that he is currently not contagious," SOC CEO Peter Reinebo said in a press release.

Two of Johansson's teammates, Marcus Grate and Calle Halfvarsson, who were seated close to him on the flight, tested negative upon arrival as did the rest of the squad. Before departure, all Swedish skiers were also issued with advanced full-face masks with active filtration of incoming and outgoing air.

The masks, which are manufactured by a Swedish company, feature a battery-powered fan system and advanced particle filters and similar models retail for around 5,500 Swedish kronor ($580).

"Marcus and Calle will be able to train and compete as usual during the Olympics. We follow the Playbook and ensure that those who are classified as close contacts follow a special protocol," Reinebo said.
