Li's a legend in the making
Bubbly personality
Li's rising profile is also attributable to her bubbly personality, with her quick-witted responses in interviews proving to be particularly endearing to the public.
"The most unforgettable moment at the National Games was how the volunteers rushed to find me for autographs after the post-match media conference. They were so passionate," Li told China Daily.
"They kept pushing forward to me and even accidentally knocked down a table in front of me. I just told them to calm down and move back, because the table fell onto my legs. I was surprised that there were so many people."
She's not overwhelmed by all the attention, however, and is happy if it helps promote the sport she loves.
"Right now I can still handle the pressure of the attention from media and fans, and I really want to thank them. One day when I went shopping with my father and aunt, some people in the market noticed me and gathered around me," said Li.
"They wanted to have photos and chat with me, but my father helped me out by telling them we had plans and needed to go. I was totally OK with it, but it startled my father and aunt.
"People are generally very nice to me. For example, the airline stewardesses recognized me when I was flying back to our training base after the National Games. They were very nice and even sent a little card wishing me the best."
She admits, though, it took her a while to acclimatize to the spotlight.
"Actually everyone is nervous when they first face the cameras. My coaches asked me why I was so scared? They told me, 'This is your stage now, which you've been fighting hard for. Just show yourself!" she said.
Li also credits something of a family atmosphere within the national squad for helping her cope with her newfound fame.
"The big brothers and sisters in the national team-athletes and coaches-all treat me so well and they consider me a younger sister. I think my confidence and great mentality is also a result of their love," Li added.
"I fear nothing because of their support. Yes, indeed, I have been their favorite in the national team."
Fans can rest assured, though, Li isn't about to get complacent in such a convivial environment.
"When I joined the national team, I quickly realized how super hardworking everyone is. I would feel awkward if I didn't try hard enough," she said.
"And I really want to thank the national team for all the support. I was struggling with knee and waist injuries, but the national squad's medical team helped me so much through my recovery."
