Suarez slams Barca amid Atletico title joy

Atletico Madrid won La Liga and Luis Suarez found vindication, his goal securing a 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid on Saturday that clinched his team another remarkable Spanish title.

Suarez began the season crying after being forced out of Barcelona but ended it with his 21st goal of the season to earn Atletico a first league triumph since 2014, this one at the expense of Real Madrid.

"It was hard last summer, the way that Barcelona despised me, underappreciated me," said Suarez.

"Atletico opened the door to give me the chance to show that I could still be a force."

Coach Diego Simeone said of his evergreen 34-year-old striker: "Suarez is a man of character. He's defiant, he's a goal scorer."

A trophy-less season for Real means more questions will be asked of coach Zinedine Zidane's future.

"I will discuss with the club in the next few days, quietly. But not now. We will see in the next few days," said the Frenchman on reports his tenure is about to end.

BASKETBALL

'Big 3' find their flow as Nets seize advantage

Brooklyn's 'Big 3' went from way off to off and running.

Kevin Durant had 32 points and 12 rebounds, Kyrie Irving scored 29 points and the Nets recovered from their superstars' frigid start to beat the Boston Celtics 104-93 on Saturday night in Game 1 of the first-round playoff series.

James Harden finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in just the ninth appearance of the season for the trio. The three combined to go 0 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half, then stormed out of the locker room with an 18-4 run to open the third and swing the lead the Nets' way for good.

Durant, Irving and Harden scored 28 of the Nets' 31 points in the period, with Joe Harris-who made Brooklyn's only 3-pointer of the first half-hitting another for the other points.

Harris had 10 points for the Nets, who announced a sellout crowd of 14,391 and host Game 2 on Tuesday night.

Biles marks return with groundbreaking vault

US gymnastics superstar Simone Biles returned to competition with a bang on Saturday, completing a historic vault to launch her final run to the Tokyo Olympics.

The five-time Olympic gold medalist, who hadn't competed since winning five golds at the 2019 world championships, delivered on the vault she's been preparing-a Yurchenko double pike-at the US Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The vault, featuring a roundoff onto the springboard and back handspring into a piked double backflip, had never been done before in women's competition.

Biles sailed through it with so much power that she over-rotated slightly and stepped back on the landing.
