Strokes of genius

Yuichi Inoue, one of the Japan's most distinguished calligraphers from the latter half of the 20th-century, is known for inventing novel ways to practice and appreciate calligraphy, such as "one-character writing". Yuichi Inoue: Bell Tolls from Japan, an exhibition now on at Tsinghua University Art Museum through March 28, shows 112 works that span the great calligrapher's whole career. The exhibition, the most comprehensive showcase of Inoue's works in China so far, invites visitors into his artistic sphere and provides a view of how he renewed people's understanding of classical Eastern calligraphy, and how his abstract and highly expressive style introduced the world to the depth of Eastern culture and influenced those on the forefront of Western art in the 1950s and '60s.

Fiddler on the hoof

Chi Baolege, a renowned player of morin khuur (horse-head fiddle), will give a performance with the Chi Baolege Wild Horses Morin Khuur band, featuring pieces such as Anthem for the Pasture, Dance Music of Mongolia and Ordos Plateau. Morin khuur soloists Chi Bulag and Chi Bulgoude will also play in the concert. Over the past six decades, Chi Baolege has not only gained a reputation for his solid performing skills, but also won a large audience through the way he combines the morin khuur with Western musical instruments, such as the violin. He founded his Chi Baolege Wild Horse Morin Khuur band in 1986 and has toured worldwide.

The artist's enclosure

Moye Jingshe in Taipei is known for being the last residence of master artist Zhang Daqian, and one which he carefully designed and transformed into a modern version of a classical Chinese garden and a spiritual haven. It was there that Zhang also received friends, one of whom, Hu Chongxian, the renowned photographer, captured the poetic beauty and philosophical ideas of Moye Jingshe. The Adobe of Illusions: The Garden of Zhang Daqian, an exhibition now on at the Yuz Museum Shanghai and set to run until April 11, offers a glimpse into the life of Moye Jingshe by showing a collection of Hu's photos on which Zhang left handwritten comments. Through Hu's lens, one can savor the mansion's serenity which reflects Zhang's utmost aesthetic taste. Also, Hu zoomed in on the lotus and plum blossoms in the garden which show Zhang's great passion for nature.

Center of excellence

Conductor Lyu Jia will lead the China NCPA Orchestra to perform in a concert marking the 13th anniversary of the National Center for the Performing Arts. A musical piece, titled Evolution, composed by Julian Yu, will be premiered. Other repertories include Chinese composer Zhao Jiping's Pipa Concerto No 2, Xin Hugang's Symphonic poem Gada Mairen and Qu Wei's Symphonic poem Monument to the People's Heroes. Pipa player Zhang Qiang will take part in the concert.
