Yellow River sees its first flood of this year
The Yellow River saw its first flood this year due to continuous rainfall in the upper reaches, the Yellow River Conservancy Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources said on Friday. The Yellow River is China's second-longest. After recent heavy rainfall, the amount of water flowing per second at Tangnaihai hydrologic station in Northwest China's Qinghai province has increased to 2,500 cubic meters, the commission said. The commission launched a blue alert for floods and a level IV emergency response, both the lowest rungs in China's four-tier alert and emergency response systems, starting 9 am Friday. The commission has asked local governments along the Yellow River Basin to continue monitoring the situation and enhance patrols on dams and flood control projects.

Former official gets life in jail for bribes
Wei Chuanzhong, former deputy head of China's quality watchdog, was sentenced to life in prison for bribery, according to a ruling made by Chenzhou Intermediate People's Court in Hunan province on Friday. Wei, who served as deputy director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine, was also deprived of political rights for life and all his properties were confiscated, the ruling said. The court said the defendant used his positions to seek benefits of more than 120 million yuan ($17 million) from 2001 to 2019. Wei stood at trial and pleaded guilty to bribery charges in January. He was expelled from the Communist Party of China in September for serious violations of its disciplines and laws.
