Chongqing vice-mayor under investigation
Deng Huilin, vice-mayor of Chongqing and head of the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Public Security, is under investigation for suspected serious violations of Party discipline and the law, the country's top anti-corruption watchdogs said on Sunday without elaborating. Deng, 55, is from Wuhan, Hubei province, and holds a master's degree in law. He began working in 1984 and joined the Communist Party of China in 1989, according to a resume released by the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission. He built a career in the police system in Hubei before transferring to Chongqing in July 2017 to become head of the city's public security bureau. He became vice-mayor of Chongqing in 2018.
Science funding applications up 11.3%
A total of 250,703 funding applications for natural science research projects were made last year, according to the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The number of applications was 25,351 higher than in 2018, representing year-on-year growth of 11.3 percent, the foundation said. It supported 45,192 projects from 1,469 institutes in various fields, with direct funding of 28.1 billion yuan ($4 billion) and indirect funding from other sources of 4.9 billion yuan. The foundation plans to allocate 29.5 billion yuan to finance science projects this year, with additional indirect funding estimated at about 5.6 billion yuan. As of May 20 this year, a total of 269,700 applications had been received, an increase of 12 percent over the same period in 2019.
