BWF to seek clarification from Denmark on staging Thomas & Uber Cup after latest COVID-19 measures
KUALA LUMPUR - The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said on Tuesday it is seeking clarification from Denmark's government on its latest measures on COVID-19 on the staging of Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, which have been rescheduled to take place in August.
BWF said it and Badminton Denmark are aware of the latest by the Danish government to extend a ban on "larger gatherings" in Denmark until the end of August.
"BWF and Badminton Denmark are currently seeking clarification from Danish authorities on the definition of larger gatherings and how this might affect the ability to stage the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2020 on the rescheduled dates of 15-23 August," BWF said.
BWF Annual General Meeting 2020 and BWF Members' Forum, which will be held on the sidelines of the tournaments, could also be affected, the world governing body of badminton said in a statement.
The World Men's Team Championship and Women's Team Championship, scheduled to be held in Aarhus, Denmark from May 16 to 24, have been postponed until August 15 to 23 due to COVID-19 pandemic, BWF announced in March.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday that Denmark will reopen in a gradual and controlled way starting April 15.
She added that large assemblies such as festivals are now officially prohibited until August and there will be no easing on travel restrictions as borders will remain closed.
