The central Pacific island nation of Kiribati has stood on the right side of history by restoring diplomatic relations with China, President Xi Jinping said on Monday.
He made the remarks while meeting with Taneti Mamau, the nation's president, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
China and Kiribati restored diplomatic relations in September after Kiribati severed its so-called "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan.
The restoration of diplomatic relations under the basis of upholding the one-China principle has unveiled a new chapter of bilateral ties, Xi said.
He spoke highly of the choice made by the president and government of Kiribati, which reflected their strategic vision and political courage.
