Ending violence

The ambassadors are part of the new chorus that is speaking out against the violence that has been roiling the city for more than six months. Ending violence and restoring order has been determined by the majority of the Hong Kong community and the central government to be the most pressing task for Hong Kong.

The past six months have seen massive violent protests, triggered by a now-withdrawn extradition bill that morphed into an anti-government movement, fueled by young people's dissatisfaction with the government. The half-year-long unrest has taken a financial toll on the city's economy as retail sales have slumped and unemployment has risen amid a projected full-year recession.

Sameeh Johar Hayat, the Kuwaiti ambassador to China, said he is fully confident that the Chinese government has the ability to maintain the "one country, two systems" principle and its national integrity.

Ahcene Boukhelfa, the Algerian ambassador to China, said he believes Hong Kong still has a promising future with China's rapid development, which will also benefit people of the world.
