WASHINGTON - China's Wang Yafan lost to Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in straight sets in the opening round of the Washington Open on Monday.

Wang, ranked 51st in the world, fought just one hour and 13 minutes before losing at 6-3, 6-2 in the lopsided match.

The fifth seed Tsurenko broke Wang three times in each of the two sets en route to the victory and will play against either Zarina Diyas of Kazahkstan or Cori Gauff of the United States in the second round.

The Washington Open, serving as one of the tuneup tournaments for next month's US Open, will end on August 4.
