Wrongfully imprisoned man compensated with 4.6 m yuan

Liu Zhonglin, a man wrongfully imprisoned for murder for 25 years, was granted 4.6 million yuan ($670,000) in state compensation on Monday, The Beijing News reported.
The money includes more than 2.62 million yuan of compensation for personal freedom and more than 1.97 million yuan of compensation for spiritual damages, both setting a record for state compensation among cases in which people were unjustly charged.
In 1990, an 18-year-old woman was killed in Huimin village, Dongliao county, Northeast China's Jilin province. Liu Zhonglin, then 22 years old, was accused of murder and sentenced to life with reprieve.
He has been appealing his case for 17 years. On March 28, 2012, the Higher People's Court of Jilin Province decided to review the case. After more than six years of review, the court declared Liu innocent for lack of evidence.
He was acquitted in April 2018 after spending 9,217 days in prison.
On May 23, 2018, 50-year-old Liu applied for 16.6 million yuan in state compensation, including more than 7.87 million yuan for personal freedom and 8 million yuan for spiritual damages.
