BEIJING -- China's Civil Affairs Minister Huang Shuxian said the country has more than 800,000 registered social organizations, at a video conference on the work of national civil affairs on Thursday.

Social organizations in China include community groups, trust foundations, industry organizations and non-profit organizations.

A total of 5,845 illicit social organizations have been investigated and handled in a crackdown on illegal social organizations launched by the Ministry of Civil Affairs last year, according to the ministry.

China has about 12,000 registered voluntary organizations and more than 100 million registered volunteers, who volunteered over 1.2 billion hours in total, the ministry said.

Social organization management and voluntary services in China have seen steady development over the past year, Huang said.
