Newly elected political advisers asked to focus on learning job

China's top political adviser, Wang Yang, called on newly elected advisers to learn all they can to better fulfill their duties.

Wang spoke at the opening ceremony of a three-day seminar that started on Monday in Beijing and was attended by about 500 new members of the country's top political advisory body. It concluded on Wednesday.

Political advisers should learn more to improve their minds and improve their proposals, said Wang, who is chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Attaching importance to learning is a good tradition and an important task of the CPPCC, he said, adding that it's especially so in the new era, when both international and domestic situations have undergone changes.

Wang said quality should take precedence over quantity when it comes to proposals, and efforts should be made by all members together to improve the effect of proposals.

Political adviser Wu Shangzhi, who is president of the China Periodicals Association, said Wang's speech was a reminder of the importance and urgency of learning for new members.

He said new members may naturally focus more on a certain industry or field with which they are familiar, but they should expand their horizons and view things as a whole.

Quality is vital in the work of crafting proposals; at the same time, advisers should improve their ability to handle those proposals and to strive together to promote a high-quality proposal process, Wu said.

The seminar, which was designed for newly elected members of the 13th CPPCC, included lectures and discussions on international relations, reform and opening-up, and proposals. Attendees also viewed an exhibition on the country's progress at the National Museum of China.
