Sustainable development eyed for intl organization

Hans Friederich, director-general of the Beijing-based International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, said on Monday that his expectations are to hear more about China's international role in sustainable development, particularly the role nature plays in the field.

He said China's eco-civilization concept is a fantastic way forward to look at how nature and mankind can work together for sustainable development to mitigate climate change. It also can really help countries that are in need of using resources more effectively, efficiently and sustainably in global development.

"For me, the real excitement of the year's program is the role China plays internationally," Friederich said, adding that China is a leading partner while working with countries in Africa and Latin America.

"We are very much looking forward to working with China in South-South cooperation and a stronger partnership with our 43 member states to promote bamboo and rattan as a green solution for sustainable development," Friederich said.

Founded in 1997, INBAR was the first intergovernmental organization established in China. The organization received a letter of congratulations from President Xi Jinping last year as it celebrated its 20th birthday.

In June, Friederich said, the organization will hold the first international bamboo and rattan congress and some high-level Chinese officials will be present.
