Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district) successfully placed itself into the list of National Eco-industrial Demonstration Park on Dec 27, marking the first of its kind in Northwest China.
The announcement was released after a series of acceptance inspections of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
A National Eco-industrial Demonstration Zone is a new type of industrial park in accordance with the national cleaner production requirements, circular economy conception, and industrial ecology principles.

Toutunhe has invested 1.5 billion yuan ($231 million) to add 20,000 mu (1,333 hectares) of greening lands in local eco-parks, including Big Green Valley, White Bird Lake and Small Green Valley.
Ding Tongzu, vice director of the zone, said, "The zone will insist on green development and furthering the construction of eco-industrial park through strengthening the control on pollution emission and improving the zone's environment."

Ding introduced that up to now, the zone has voted down more than 30 polluting projects and the recycling rate of industrial water has reached 86 percent. The comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste was up to 95 percent, significantly exceeding the national standard.
In 2013, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Commerce, and Science and Technology approved Toutunhe to build the National Eco-Industrial Demonstration Park. In the past five years, ecological development has become a highlight of the zone's economic growth.
