SYDNEY - A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit just off Papua New Guinea on Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

The undersea quake occurred at a depth of 57 kilometers, 103 kilometers east of the mountain city of Lae and 315 kilometers north of the capital Port Moresby, at 13:35 local time on Friday.

There was no immediate tsunami warning, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The extent of damage or casualties was not clear.

Papua New Guinea lies in the so-called "Ring of Fire", an area where several tectonic plates collide.
