NEW YORK - A Russian businessman dubbed " Merchant of Death" faced trial on Tuesday in New York City, beginning with jury selection.
Viktor Bout, according to the court documents, is charged with a wide range of counts including conspiracy to kill Americans, attempting to sell arms to undercover federal agents, wire fraud and violating UN Security Council sanctions. Bout pleaded not guilty to all charges last year.
Bout, a former Soviet military officer, has been dubbed the " Merchant of Death" by his accusers. In 2008, US agents arrested Bout in Thailand during an elaborate sting operation. He was extradited to the US last November.
The Russian government lobbied heavily against Bout's extradition, denouncing the move as illegal. The trial is expected to last three to four weeks.
The 2005 movie "Lord of War" which starred Nicholas Cage, was said to be based on Bout's life.
